Hispanic adults in the United States lead the highest percentage of individuals without health insurance , according to a study published by the Pew Research Center in 2022.
The Hispanic community faces great challenges in accessing quality medical care. Among the most pressing challenges are language limitations . Frequently, the lack of information in Spanish creates a gap in knowledge about the programs that are available for the community to access health insurance.
It is imperative to communicate and educate the community in Spanish about how the health system works in the United States and the ways in which you can access health insurance. Our community, afflicted by high rates of diabetes and high blood pressure, is among the most in need of preventative and follow-up care.
The United States government has set itself the goal of creating communities of specialized personnel in the Health Insurance Marketplace to serve and include all those who are without access to health insurance .
United Language Group received a federal grant in 2021 to create a non-profit program of community navigators, certified by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The program helps the public in North Carolina sign up for the Health Insurance Marketplace, or as it is often known, Obamacare . In the Health Insurance Marketplace, the public can access the different health insurances available to them and can find out about the subsidies or federal assistance that they can access.
Community Navigators educate the public about the Health Insurance Marketplace and the health coverage system in the United States, breaking down concepts and even vocabulary that for many is highly complex and completely unknown. The goal is to get people to understand how health insurance works and to connect them to low-cost coverage .
The Community Navigator Program also provides resources and information for those who do not qualify for Marketplace coverage. The goal is for everyone to have access to free or low-cost health care .
In North Carolina , ULG’s Community Navigator program offers free bilingual care for anyone who needs information and assistance.
The period to buy low-cost health insurance ends January 15. To access the Health Insurance Marketplace, visit the page https://www.cuidadodesalud.gov/
